This book was purchased because we were taking a Seine river cruise to visit Utah and Omaha Beaches and the American Cemetery in Normandy. The book is wonderfully written. I was half-way through Ambrose's other WWII book, D-Day, when I ordered this one. D-Day really peaked my interest in knowing more about WWII and I hated the thought of not reading more. Ambrose was such an accomplished writer and historian and the world lost a true novelist with his death. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the WWII European campaign although I recommend starting with D-Day first. This is arguably the best book ever written for those whom history is not their favorite topic to read. Ambrose's style tells the story like a novel, while including sufficient facts and detail history junkies like me will still appreciate.He answered one question I always had: Were the medics not shot at by either side? [no, I am not telling :) ]Even those whom "reading is not their thing" will likely find the stories that unfolds to be engrossing.If you have a book report on WWII due, read this. It will be the easiest one you ever wrote.
